On donation-driven feature articles

My most viewed content online is a 3 page instructional article I wrote in 2003 detailing the rebuild process for a specific turbocharger. I spent no less than 8 hours writing and annotating pictures to provide a very thorough step-by-step process for DIY folks to follow. The article has always been free. Around October 1, 2007, I thought I would try something - I added a paragraph to the end of page 3 asking for donations of $1 “if you’re so-inclined”.

The article has been read by 800 unique visitors since the day I added the donation paragraph. Since 2003, the article has become THE turbo rebuild how-to on the internet (for this line of turbo). It is linked to from all manner of automotive forums.

To date I have not received a single cent.

It is time to implement plan B.
