So I don’t spoil anything for anyone, click through only if you want to read the review.
First, the “Grizzly Man” plot summary from IMDB:
A docudrama that centers on amateur grizzly bear expert Timothy Treadwell. He periodically journeyed to Alaska to study and live with the bears. He was killed, along with his his girlfriend, Amie Huguenard, by a rogue bear in October 2003. The films explores their compassionate lives as they found solace among these endangered animals.
I suggested a re-titling to “The Most Obnoxious Documentary with Bear Footage Ever Made”.
Here’s everything you need to know about the movie:
- Boy fails to become a man (ever)
- Boy fails to find any place for himself in the world
- Boy falls to drugs and alcohol
- Boy spends 13 long expeditions in Alaska amongst BROWN bears (not grizzly)
- Boy continues a bizarre lonely downward spiral through the 13 expeditions
- Boy records over 100 hours of footage
- Boy convinces a woman to join him in the wilds
- Boy (age 45) and woman get eaten by a bear in 2003
But why is the movie so bad? Treadwell himself is remarkably self-conscious and overwhelmingly pathetic in every minute of his video footage. The movie is nothing more than a cautionary tale regarding the human condition.
Treadwell (the boy-man) has been nominated more than 100 times for the Darwin Award, a tribute to those who have improved the human genome by removing themselves from the gene pool.
Ignore the bullshit awards stamped all over the DVD case. PASS.
