Monopoly to no longer include paper money

My coworker Jeremy might applaud this, but I was perturbed to read that not only will Monopoly no longer come with paper money, but it’s the result of a marketing deal with Visa.

Spokesman Chris Weatherhead said: “The new electronic Monopoly reflects the changing nature of society and the advancement of technology.”

Booooo. Hisssss.

Now excuse me while I go buy up stocked shelves full of the old version so I can sell them on eBay in 10 years to people who want the one “without the bullshit electronic card reader that stopped working in 2 years”.

As much as I dislike carrying paper money and a pocket full of metal, I don’t see why a classic board game needs to change with the times.

Although, if the US Mint would allow us to print our own money like Hasbro (http://www.hasbro.com/monopoly/pl/page.treasurechest/dn/default.cfm) I might be pursuaded to change my mind.

I don’t know. I kind of feel the same about this that I do about the special editions of the original Star Wars trilogy. As long as I can always get the original, the new version will be a nice change of pace. Especially if they actually incorporate credit ratings and debt/income ratios and…

Okay, maybe that’s a little too much like real life.

Anyway, if they just completely nix the classic version… Well, I guess I’m just glad I got that nice anniversary edition while I had the chance.
