I finally got around to seeing Monster’s Ball tonight. Aside from having Thornton and Berry in it, I didn’t know anything about it. I had heard that it was controversial, depressing, and really heavy.
When the movie ended, I felt like I’d seen a completely different movie than everyone else. It wasn’t emotionally draining in any way for me, and I felt mildly upbeat at the end. What on earth is depressing and deflating about a man and woman, both having some hard times and such, finding each other? The fricking movie ends with lots of drama placed squarely behind two people: A woman who has tragically lost her son, husband, and house (separately) and a man who starts to understand that he’s been the wrong person for a long time. They end up together, in a nice paid for house, with 2 cars, and affection for each other.
Big woop, she saw the drawings.
I just don’t get it. Totally NOT a “super depressing” movie.
