Pandora’s music recommendations are good

I’ve been poking around at Pandora lately and it’s pretty impressive. Briefly, Pandora is a music recommendation service. You start by simply typing the name of an artist or song you like. Pandora does some work for a few seconds, then starts playing music very similar to your choice. Buying a particular song (iTunes Music Store) or an entire album (Amazon) is 2 clicks away.

It’s the result of 5 years of music classification done as part of the Music Genome Project (the man hours behind this is mind-boggling). Some of you who have been deep in the internet for a long time now may remember similar concepts back in the day - Ringo, HOMR, Firefly. Of course the widespread broadband internet access wasn’t available then, so streaming music was unheard of.

Did I mention it’s free? $36/year only if you want to turn off ads.
